Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter

Made by Sierra, released in 1986/1991

The Deltaur!

Current Zar note: I did this LP in 2007! I left my write-up mostly unchanged.

Man I am not used to doing short screencap adventures like this. :O It's weird to think this didn't take very long at all. Then again a lot of the early Sierra games were very short, so you know. Even though I was looking at like, everything in this it still doesn't take up that much time. BLAH BLAH BLAH LET'S FUNERAL you know if I keep going with the Space Quests, someday we'll get to SQ6 and that line will suddenly make sense to you guys. I pick up so many random things from these games.

HEY REMEMBER THAT GUY IN THE BAR WHO GAVE YOU TWO LETTERS? Here's the second copy protection hangup...let me see, did I upload the answer to this already? Let me check.

Aha!

There you go. Match the letters that guy gave you to the right code, and voila! I actually accidentally put in the wrong code the first time, then tried to get out of it by canceling and...

WOOPS then I think you die or everything blows up or something I can't remember :B HOPE YOU GUYS ARE SAVING. I loaded and tried again.

WHEEEEEEE

If you put in the wrong code, the meteors crash into you here and kill you. :D

The Deltaur Part One! Very dramatic. THE DELTAUR IS BAD NEWS

HMM

OH FRICK The Deltaur PART TWO with more drama and oh shi- type sounds.

Heh, Space Sputum. I CARE NOT FOR SUCH THINGS, I AM GOING IN

YEAH WOO LOCK AND LOAD

BET YOU WERE WONDERING WHEN THAT'D BE IMPORTANT WEREN'T YOU

WEREN'T YOU

Yes if you don't have it here you die. I've forgotten about that a number of times lemme tell you, and it's very, very frustrating. NOT THIS TIME THOUGH, BUCKO, I GOT MY JETPACK.

Something about this makes me laugh so hard. I don't know why.

The Deltaur (Part Three) has a neat, empty kind of eerie feel to it. LIKE SPACE, I SUPPOSE.

Turn the crank here, yup yup

Whee!

Way to look at things in order, self.

HMM, I HAVE NO IDEA. MAYBE IT'S JUST THERE FOR DECORATION.

Oh frick keycard did I miss something oh frick

THIS IS THE MINDSET YOU HAVE ALMOST EVERY SECOND IN A SIERRA GAME IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED IT A MILLION TIMES and actually even this time, when I came in here, I thought oh frick maybe I forgot something I don't have a keycard ARGH NO

So if I don't have a keycard, there has to be a way around that, so MAYBE MY MIGHTY MAN MUSCLES WILL MAKE THE DOOR MOVE

Oh hey maybe that won't be necessary at all someone's come to open the door for me! I'll just stand right here and say hi.

ADURR. Thanks for the tip, Sierra, time to hide.

HAHAHA SUCKER

Hmm. Things.

Hee hee. That's actually a recurring theme through all the Space Quest games, that Roger just has this deepset need to clean and straighten things wherever he goes. OBVIOUSLY, DESTINED FROM BIRTH TO BECOME A JANITOR

HMM.

HEY REMEMBER THIS THING WE PICKED UP LIKE TWO EPISODES AGO

WONDERING WHEN IT'D COME IN HANDY EH

EH

Whee ducts! These ducts I guess are a maze? Sort of. Each screen looks almost exactly the same as the last. After much trial and error and many pieces of paper, my brilliant strategy for this maze is to keep going down and left until something looks suspicious.

Like this new ventilation grill! TASTE FOOT, GRILL

Hey that thing looks neat I'm going to touch it

Roger immediately climbs inside. ROGER WTF no wonder you die so often

I'm picturing Roger now compulsively climbing in other people's things because he just can't help himself. GET OUT OF MY CLOTHES HAMPER, ROGER.

I didn't cap this because I'm an idiot, but this Sarien guard came in and took off his clothes and threw them in the thing. HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THIS ALIEN STRIPTEASE? I think I was just snickering too much to remember.

See Roger this is why they have warnings on dryers telling children not to play inside.

I think, if I remember right, that Rog-in-a-Box plays here. Silly music. :B

Yeah! How about that!

Actually, I am kind of comforted when things like this happen in games. It reassures me that I didn't forget anything, since this new area doesn't need anything from my old area. I dunno. :B YOU WORRY ABOUT THAT KIND OF THING IF YOU PLAY GAMES LIKE THIS TOO MUCH

HAHAHAHA

Well I'll be.

The Sarien Corridors are kind of sinister and scary, and have a nice 1950s weird wiggy synthsound in them. Heh.

HAHAHAha Roger just shooting up and down the elevators, laughing hysterically.

"ROGER I HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE"

"WOOOOOOOOOOOO"

What a weirdly designed ship.

Like...ultraviolent.

And just in case you didn't look at the cartridge back at that dude's place near the skeleton, you can look at it here! Still says the same thing.

Roger: D: *runs*

I was kind of surprised I didn't get killed for this. Woo!

SKYLARK, DEFINITELY

All I can hear this in now is Gary Owens voice, with this really dry sarcasm and hee.

STOP TRYING TO EXPLOIT OUR 2-D SCREEN LAYOUT, GET GOING YOU SLACKER >(

Hahahahaha

Obviously I am going to have to gain access to the Captain's Pod.

IT'S ALL SO FUTURISTIC

BUDDING, LIKE MUSHROOMS

Hee hee

YOU'RE SO LAZY ROGER that's why i love you

HMMM

I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE SPACE QUEST

Oh hey this looks important

Tee hee, cowabunga. WELL HERE WE ARE, THIS IS WHAT WE CAME FOR. NOW...now what.

This guy will gladly punch your head right off your shoulders if you mess with him. Why didn't I get any caps of that? Way to slack off on the deaths here, self.

DO I SOUND LIKE I'M ON OLD TIME RADIO?

I like how randomly specific this is.

AS AM I, IT'S ALL SO COLORFUL

I love this game so much, guys. So much.

I should probably look up who this Wally Wood guy is sometime.

STOP THUMPING IT

SEZ YOU

Something about how this is in all lower case really amuses me.

PROBABLY NEVER

HMM. WILL THIS COME BACK LATER?

What a convenient vantage point.

OKAY HERE'S MARVIN sorry, I confused Marvin in the last entry with Robbie from the Black Hole. BUT THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE MARVIN at least that's what I've heard.

Hahahahaha

I love pestering people, I've realized.

GAS GRENADES YOU SAY

Good thing I got this id card along with this swell disguise!

Okay I didn't cap this very well, but it's actually kind of hard to do unless you're paying pretty close attention to what you're doing. You have to wait for Marvin to go to the back, then run over to that side thingy, lift it, grab the grenade, then run back to the counter. You have to time this right, or Marvin will see you and shoot you. For some reason I tend to have trouble doing this sometimes, I either try to do it too quickly or too slowly. But anyway.

Here, I've already snagged the sucker. WOO GRENADE FOR ME. I think you only have one shot at this while he gets you your laser pistol, so make sure you save before you show Marvin your card.

Alright, innocuous!

Violence IS IN THE CARDS

hey buddy want a grenade its free

Bwahahahahahahaha

Now to go ALL THE WAY AROUND to the generator to turn it off, grumble grumble

WAY TO GO ROGER

Everytime I trip or fall over anything, the phrase "Your inability to walk without falling on your face" pops into my head.

MY COVER, SHE IS BLOWN! Good thing I got me a laser pistol.

This is essentially a game of quick draw. When any Sarien sees you (read: is on the same screen as you) they'll try to shoot you. Basically, you want to nail them first. Thankfully they tend to miss a few times before they'll hit you, so you don't need lightning quick reflexes to be able to take them out. You do have to be relatively quick though.

ALRIGHT LET'S GO WOO I'M PUMPED

Woo!

I think touching that might NOT have killed you instantly, but I can't remember. WHY DIDN'T I CHECK darn it.

Time to blow this pop stand.

HEY BUDDY I HAVE ACCESS NOW LET ME IN KTHX

SO LONG, SUCKERS! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Poor Mantis ship didn't even have a chance to eat another mantis ship's head. :<

And back to Xenon, victorious!

I see that statue there Two Guys I'm on to you.

HEY YOU LOOK KIND OF FAMILIAR 8D

I love the Closing Scenes medley at the end of this game. :D it just reprises all the main themes you've already heard, including the main Space Quest theme. Man, I can't help it, everytime I hear the main Space Quest theme I just feel so happy. SO MANY MEMORIES.

Hahahahaha esteemed, yeah. Very much so.

OR WILL HE?

A series :O

SIX MORE ACTUALLY they never did make the seventh one. Tears.

I'm always kind of surprised by how small the teams are on things like this, compared to what they are now. Well, not surprised I guess. I just think it's interesting that games take so much more time and money and people than they used to, since they've gotten so much bigger.

Also did the music for Quest for Glory. :D

WOO YAAAAY

I really love this series to death, as I said in my first installment for this. Hopefully we'll be able to go through the whole series someday. It's really great fun, and I love it so much. :D

Next up, I'm thinking proooobably Kyrandia. That should be fun to go back through again. :D
