Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero

Made by Sierra, released in 1989/1992

Grind grind grind your stats

Current Zar note: I did this LP in 2008! I left my write-up mostly unchanged.

This is the point that usually takes a few days, depending on how much free time you have to play, which is what sets these games apart from King's Quest or Space Quest, which I can usually beat in like an hour or something. This is aaaall stat raising. Thankfully in QFG this isn't really boring, just kind of tedious (except magic, argh), and not even really necessary in most cases, you can usually beat the game with a minimum of real work. I just get a lot of satisfaction from having a hero with perfect stats at the end of the game (something that I've done since I was first playing them like fifteen years ago). MY HEROES ARE SUPER BUFF

and therefore break the game

COME SEE

That little rainbow cursor there is for Flame Dart. You can peg enemies outside of battle with it, but you'll usually only have time for one, unless you hit them with Dazzle too.

POW

Ah, easy cash.

ALMOST

:O Intrigue!

First perfect stat! Soon to be followed by the others.

Stupid mantrays.

Dang, you can't really see these very clearly. BUT IT CURLED UP AND DIED

Another reason why Mantrays are annoying.

A Cheetaur!

Cheetaurs are really fun to watch, they move in interesting ways, and they're also a good source of cash. You'll get a better look at them later, hopefully.

They just kind of whack you about the head

Most Cheetaurs drop like 7-10 claws a pop, not bad. Although if you're leveling you can pick up a lot and accidentally go over your weight limit and mess up your stat screen.

Woo night stat screen, more graphical weirdness

It can add up real quick :O

I like how the Hero just curls up into a ball kind of

Closer and closer

Hee hee

BACK TO WORK

BLUE SHIELDS

:O

Bouncer, eh.

PAYING ATTENTION?

Okay, this is a bit tricky. You have to wait on this screen for a minute or two for Bruno to walk away. Otherwise if you leave the screen, Bruno will show up and hit you with a dagger and kill you. So just stay put for about a minute or two, and you should be alright.

Although it never hurts to be safe

GASP

he must die

I'm pretty sure you need to walk down, otherwise this all screws up. But I'm not sure. WALK DOWN FROM HERE, EITHER WAY.

And come back up, and...

BLARG

GWAAAGH

Lotta keys around here

Bruno shows up randomly in front of the town during the day. He hadn't shown up until this point, but generally you're supposed to talk to him before the archery meeting. But I didn't see him. :B

Thieves of course see him a bit more often, heh.

You can learn this for free later on, but WHY NOT SPEND SOME MONEY I GOT TONS WOOO

Me and the Antwerp are not getting married

Hee hee, spooky dame.

THEY LOVE COMPANY

I love the idea of an organized union of thieves with passwords and ids and everything

I feel like you got it out for me Bruno

IT'S DELICIOUS

Bane of my existence

Good enough to beat the weapon master? LET'S FIND OUT

>:(

AAAAAAAAAARGH

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

So anyway, there's this bit coming up where I can't come back to the castle without triggering the end of the game, and the Weapon Master will only show up in the castle. So basically, I had to beat him before continuing on with the rest of the game. >:( Arrrrgh time to level

Over the course of several in-game days

THROW DOWN

AFHDAHGHAHGJAGHSHGDF

They're everywhere

Full array of Goblin deaths!

I DEMAND ADEQUATE COMPENSATION

WEAPON USE TO 100 WOOO

Weapon Use always goes up pretty quick.

FLAME DART THAT TROLL

HAHA SUCK IT TROLL

Aha, now we're getting somewhere. After a certain point, the game will start loading night monsters during the day. Not sure if this is supposed to happen or what, or exactly what triggers it, but I think it's a combo of stats and experience.

And here's a clear look at a Mantray!

Zzzzaap

Pain in the butt.

And to raise throwing, I don't have daggers so I just pick up rocks and throw them. This is easy, and also raises your strength I think. Takes maybe a day or so in-game time to finish this stat off.

Bam!

New monster! A Terrorsaurus. :O

BLOOD EVERYWHERE

BLOOOOOD

Man.

IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE RUN

another one? man.

Heh.

No special response for that answer.

Dragon face

tee hee

And the joke we heard the punchline for before!

Flying Mantray!

with lightning

Gallopin Cheetaur!

I really love watching Cheetaurs run.

Dodge is annoying, you basically just sit in battle and spam dodge over and over. Same with Parry. But they also kind of raise intelligence and luck sometimes as side bonuses, but you know.

Agility and Luck woooo

So close

This message will haunt you if you don't have stamina pills. I NEED MORE STAMINA

Dodge and Throwing WOOO

Magic sucks to raise. It's by far the most annoying stat, along with Intelligence.

PARRY TO 100 WOOO almost finished off the right side of the screen

LET'S SEE HOW WE DO THIS TIME, WEAPON DOUCHE

You are going down.

I was clicking through this so fast trying to beat him that i clicked through his first message, which I think was something like ENOUGH! or whatever.

Nice to see that you're a sore loser too. SUCK IT, WEAPON MASTER!

Ha, in your face. Now for the rest of the game!

Will we fulfill the prophecy in our next installment? WAIT AND SEE!
