Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero

Made by Sierra, released in 1989/1992

Dance, dance like butterflies

Current Zar note: I did this LP in 2008! I left my write-up mostly unchanged.

GOBLIN HIDEOUT that bush is suspicious.

SO MUCH FOR YOUR MEAN LOOK

Then I decided that hey I can do some leveling here why not.

When you fight more than one thing, they always come at you one at a time. Ninjas follow that same rule I think, and thugs.

You can also make maybe 60-70 silvers off the goblin hideout if you're killing all eight of them. BUT THAT'S LATER.

shh look over there

SUDDENLY BLUE SHIELDS so many graphical glitches in this game

Have some mushrooms.

You can only sell maybe two or three batches of these. But money isn't too big a problem in this game, really.

Hmmmm no note.

WELL I NEVER

You can climb this wall to work your climbing, but only during the day. And only from this side. You can't do it at night unless you're a thief, since this alley becomes very dangerous at night. Frick I just realized I never went in the alley. I JUST AUTOMATICALLY AVOID IT ah well. If you play it yourself (WHICH YOU SHOULD DO) you can run in there quick enough.

Oh Stamina potions, I love you.

YOU'RE GOIN DOWN OGRE BOY

Okay this kind of didn't go well. Must go raise stats.

BUT FIRST LET'S LOOK AT THE TREES!

GET OUT

I loved that game!

there it is

THAT'S NOT OKAY

STOP MAKING US COME UP WITH THESE DESCRIPTIONS WHAT ARE YOU DOING CLICKING ON TREES ANYWAY

Okay enough of that

i'm so awesome

wooooo

awesome screencap self

TAKE THAT you shielding whore

Better money than goblins, but really, money's not much of an issue.

whoop

Frick ran into a Mantray. These things are frigging obnoxious. They float all over the screen so you can only hit them when they're close to you and shoot lightning and argh. CANNOT TAKE ONE OF THESE JUST YET. You'll see them more clearly later.

Haha, escape.

Then I realized I could take care of the last dispel potion ingredient while night's around.

GASP

The music that plays when the fairies dance is very simple and kind of eerie?, but my god I loved this music when I was young. I would just sing along to it over and over and over, it's one of my favorite themes from the game. :B

The Fairy Ring Medley is pretty much what it sounds like in-game with slightly more variance. The latter half is kind of lame though.
Candleborne is a remix I found off of vgmix a million years ago, and my god I love this remix so much you don't even know. I like had a heart attack when I first heard this, it was just what I was hoping for. It really makes the theme as beautiful as I always heard it and adds some nice variation and aaaa i love wingless's stuff aaaa.
A Hero's Quest covers a lot of themes from the various games, mostly the main theme but at one point the Fairy music comes in there. :D Everytime I hear that riff it just makes me so happy. A lot like when the Erana's Peace riff comes in this arrangement I get all :D :D :D

God I'm so lame for music. THE MUSIC OF THIS SERIES MEANS A LOT TO ME GUYS.

Fairy with a stained wifebeater and cigar buzzing beetle wings

Take a step and

THIS IS A TRICK QUESTION ISN'T IT?

And your hero waltzes along by himself. hee hee. I drew a picture of this eight billion years ago.

DANCE WITH ME FAIRIES

hee hee

TAKE A BOW

little somethin for the ladies

Then the fairies all cluster around you.

Dryad just takes another aspirin, sighs

This is a bit tricky, but you have to have your mouth not on your hero (or else he'll talk to himself) but not too far off of him either. Near his shoulder usually works.

She has snakes for hair!

Oh fairies.

NO WAIT I'M NOT DONE TALKING

Oh how magical those mushrooms were.

DON'T WALK IN THE RING, EH?

You get this message if your hero stays up really late. I'm not sure if it really affects anything. Maybe if you stay up for like, two days without sleeping you die. I dunno. :O

I'LL JUST TAKE A STROLL OVER HERE

I REGRET NOTHING

Anyway loading.

And then they went back to dancing. :O So I have to dance for them again, eh? EH?

I'm pretty sure if you say no they kill you, but I can't remember right now. :B

There we go, gimme some dust.

Fairies are all preteen girls. Somehow that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Hahaha hello dated reference

Hero just runs away screaming

WHOOPS

so i drank a health potion and came back

A fairy will say several different things when you leave their screen, but everytime you walk into the fairy screen you have to dance, which takes a while. So we generally avoid it at night. :O This was the only message I got off hand.

arrrrgh

Although I actually worked up my parry and dodge a little in the process, there is that.

WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE

This will be important later.

Yaaay daytime

That's the cool thing about Erana's Peace. Sleeping there restores all your stamina, health, and magic. Other places don't do that. So when you're stat grinding, make sure to stop by Erana's Peace to sleep.

Drop this shiny thing off

Then I went to go buy those spells I didn't have since hey I should get on that.

Leveling a bit

Open, Detect Magic, Trigger, Flame Dart, Fetch.

DUN DUN DUN

Calm is kind of pointless if you're taking the fighter's way out of things, but I like having it anyway for the sake of completion. Also it's kind of important for Magic User puzzles in later games and in this one at some points, I think.

YOU'RE GOIN DOWN

Nice stance, hero.

MY STARS

HAHA VICTORY must search corpse

A LOCKED CHEST, EH?

Making sure it wasn't magically boobytrapped. YOU NEVER KNOW.

SEE HOW YOU LIKE MY SWORD, LOCKED CHEST.

Haha score. Thieves pick the lock and Magic Users cast open, as you may have guessed.

SO WHAT'S IN THE CAVE? TUNE IN NEXT TIME
