Day 9 - The Distant Spring (Smoky Progg)

Current Zar note: I did this LP in 2008! I left my write-up mostly unchanged.

NEW AREA with lots of pieces huh :O

NROOOM

This place is really obnoxious.

WATER EVERYWHERE

The track for this area is Flood Source, which is just kind of chimey and distant sounding? It's an interesting theme, kind of. :O Very mellow. Distant Spring drives me nuts though, so I'm not too fond of it. THE FACT I HAVE NO BLUES IS PROBABLY A FACTOR HERE.

19 blues. Well, it could be worse I guess.

Someone dropped some bricks around here!

See that goony looking biglipped thingy there? That's a Spotty Bulbear, a relative of the Bulborb. They got pumped up to be REALLY irritating in Pikmin 2, but in this one they aren't too bad. You just have to keep your distance (I think they wake up easier than Bulborbs?) and then jump them from behind like normal Bulborbs. I think they also shake off Pikmin faster than Bulborbs, and they chomp them down faster than them too. Kind of an upgrade, but they aren't as annoying here as they are in Pikmin 2, where they have planned routes they patrol and are always awake with baby Bulbears behind them all thirsting for Pikmin flesh. D:

Floaty thing I'll get to in a minute.

ENOUGH OF THAT, LET'S GO THIS WAY!

Let's take down the Bulbear!

That floaty thing there is called a Puffy Blowhog. And why?

Bulbear: OH MY WEAK KNEES

but no, Puffys blow air around, knocking your Pikmin great distances and away from your control. Also sometimes knocking off their flowers. This doesn't really hurt your Pikmin, exactly, but it does separate them from you. It's really, REALLY irritating, and also REALLY bad when you're

say

trying to kill a Spotty Bulbear.

Bulbear: :[

Pikmin: WOAHAOAOOH D: D:

And since they all get out of your control, they just stand there all D: i just went fifty feet in the air omg D: D: and glow quietly, and you hafta whistle em back to you. This is obnoxious, especially if Puffy keeps floating around and doing it over and OVER AGAIN but this is really bad when there's a predator nearby who eats the Pikmin who just stand there all :O what do i dooo

BAH shoulda killed Puffy first. OH WELL.

Bulbear: D:

YOU'RE GOIN DOWN PUFFY

Fortunately, the Puffy stands between me and the Bulbear. FOR NOW.

When you kill Puffy, he just flies up into the air like a balloooooon

And dropped those pellets there!

Bulbear: >[

Bulbear: |(

SUCCESS

pellets pellets pellets

It was around this point that I thought it should be SMOKEY PROGG TIME so i prepaaared

10, 10 BLUES, AH AH AH

This egg is only here if you get to the Distant Spring before... 15 days go by, I think? I didn't see it my first playthrough of course, but on subsequent ones I've always managed to get here on time. There's another optional enemy... no wait, two of them, at the Impact Site I think after the ninth day... the Mamuta and the Goolix. I think one shows on even days, and one on odd days. I can't remember which one though. :O I'll probably drop by there at some point so I can show you guys.

KPOW actually I think you might be able to kill this egg by jumping it with enough blues before it explodes open, but you don't get anything for it, I think.

THERE IT IS, THE SMOKY PROGG. FREAKY, EH?

The Smoky Progg (Olimar thinks it's a malformed Mamuta I think) only shows up in Pikmin (although it would have been pretty neat to see in Pikmin 2) and it's a rather nasty optional boss. That smoke trailing behind it will kill any Pikmin that touches it instantly, so the only way you can do damage is to throw things on its face. However, if your Pikmin don't latch on, they'll fall between its front legs into the smoke trail and die. The Smoky Progg also will shake off Pikmin if they're on it for too long, usually knocking them off its back into the smoke trail, where they'll die.

AND THAT'S NOT ALL!

The Smoky Progg goes RIGHT for your base and it will stay there.

You'll be able to see this more clearly in the video, but the Smoky Progg has this ability where it rises up and sends out a shockwave, which pulls any Pikmin out of the ground that are planted. It'll sit by your base until you kill it or the day ends, sitting beneath your Onions, shockwaving any Pikmin, and running over and killing any it sees. It has no mouth, but all it needs to do is run over a Pikmin to kill it with the smoke trail. SO IF YOU HATCH THE PROGG, YOU NEED TO KILL IT. Or just wait until the day ends, or just not hatch it.

BUT IT DOES GIVE YOU A FAIRLY AWESOME REWARD, SO I'M GONNA DO IT. Although if you're going to try this yourself, I recommend cracking the egg at the beginning of the day, since fighting the Progg will take a while.

Putting my blues away before the Progg kills them all~

There, that's it sending out the shockwave. Most of my Pikmin are back in their Onions now, so that doesn't worry me too much. Imagine if you cracked this thing with a lot of Pikmin in the ground, or waiting after taking back pellets or something.

Progg is sitting annoyingly beneath my red Onion, stopping me from pulling out reds. I NEED A DISTRACTION. SINGLE YELLOW, JOIN ME.

AND BACK IN YOU GO

With the Progg, I've found its best to work with small numbers, since its easier to keep a handle on where your Pikmin are, and if you swarm it with great numbers you'll just kill all your Pikmin. It's also easier to throw a smaller amount and call them back before they fall into the trail, so ten worked for me. But I think you can push it and go to twenty if you're good. I usually can only get about five or six Pikmin on its face before it shakes them off anyway.

ARGH DIIE

AAAAGH

This is kind of a long battle of attrition, so I didn't take too many caps of it. You should really watch the video for it if you want to see the details or how it moves or whatever. :O

Woah where'd I get a blue what

ARGH okay, that flying thing in the corner holding two of my Pikmin is the Swooping Snitchbug, an irritating little enemy along the same lines as the Puffy Blowhog. It snags two of your Pikmin and carries them away, then throws them into the ground and plants them again. So it doesn't really hurt your Pikmin exactly... it just means you have to find where it took your Pikmin and pick them again. A bit annoying, but most of the time planted Pikmin are safe.

However, with a Smoky Progg around, that's not the case. D: On the other hand, the Snitchbug only grabs two at a time, so...

ARGH IT'S GETTING DARKER AND THIS THING WON'T DIE

FRICK

Also I am running out of reds. D:

NO I'M GOING TO KILL THIS THING I DID NOT WASTE THIS DAY FOR NOTHING YOU WILL DIE

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

AND I STILL HAVE TIME TO GET THE PRIZE although you sadly won't be able to see it clearly here. It's a small sphere, kind of acornlooking.

And I really wanted to give it to my blues, but I didn't have time to be picky.

And what's that sphere worth? 100 SEEDS, BABY

Hahaha just in case you hadn't gotten that message yet.

Well, no piece today, but hey! That's a big jump in Pikmin. :D

Hard to see sort of, but a Pikmin was wandering there and got jumped by Sheargrubs. D: I'M SORRY I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO LOOK FOR YOU

Wow, that's a lot. But yeah, you won't get to the next area until you get all the other pieces first. IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN no wait

Hahahaha huge spike at the end for reds. If I hadn't lost so many to that stupid Puffy/Bulbear fiasco. Ah well.

SHALL I RETURN TO SEE IF I CAN ACTUALLY FIND A PIECE HERE? PERHAPS!

And our video for today!
