Day 5 - The Forest Navel

Current Zar note: I did this LP in 2008! I left my write-up mostly unchanged.

Man I want to play this on a big tv now, since whenever I watch these videos again for the caps I see all these tiny things I didn't see while playing. For example, the screen I play on is so small that it's really hard to even make out Pikmin dots on the radar, so that won't help me find them if they get separated from me I don't think. D: I guess I'll just have to accept the reality that if a single Pikmin gets lost while I'm running around and I don't notice, it might stay lost. Ajaughhg

Oh yeah, I forgot last time but the music that plays for the Pikmin Extinction is It's My Mistake.... Poor Pikmin.

ANYWAY, NEW AREA! NEW SUCCESSES! NEW FAILURES! I swear these videos must make me look like the stupidest Pikmin player ever. I SWEAR I USUALLY DO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS. It's harder than you think to play on a tiny screen. D:

These are jpg instead of png, since it saves space. :O Is it a noticable difference? I can switch back.

As a sidenote, sometimes when I got bored I'd just zip the ship back and forth between areas cause it moves in this great unique way every time. :B I'm lame don't mind me.

WOOOOOOOOOO

Gaia's Navel. Wait no.

Weirdly enough, the Forest Navel is both one of the darkest and brightest areas. Right near the ship is really well lit, so when night falls you can see what's going on really well, as opposed to the Forest of Hope or the Impact Site. But some other areas are insanely dark. :O

The Forest Navel also has this interesting kind of twangy sound to it, just kind of quiet and mellow but still very unique to the area. Matches all the fire that's all over this place.

There you can kinda see that my yellows are attacking a set of rocks. Like grass, the rocks sometimes have nectar in them, and your Pikmin will keep attacking them as long as they're nearby. This can be reeeeally annoying if there are enemies nearby.

Honeywisps! You're going down.

Hahaha skilllz

See if I can't get this out of the way here.

YOU SLACKERS FINE COME WITH ME THEN

And like a bug to a zapper, the Pikmin's back to breaking rocks.

FINE YOU TWO DO THAT I'LL JUST GO ON BY MYSELF

Blue pellets you say

GASP

Well might as well do something while waiting for the Blue to sprout.

There we go. COME TO ME, NEW PIKMIN

que?

Blue Pikmin obarenai. I mean, don't drown. Darn it Tane no Uta. But anyway, blues are vital for some pieces and you'll generally need a good amount of them, like reds. Reds are stronger in battle than blues or yellows by the way, if I didn't mention that before. :O

But anyway, my first time around in this game, I spent ages at the Forest Navel because for some reason I could not find this Onion. I looked all over, went between this and the Forest of Hope and Impact Site looking and SURE that I needed some kind of waterproof Pikmin, but I couldn't find them. :O I eventually did locate them though but I wasted like five days in the process. AWESOME.

i've heard that blue pikmin and michael myers get along very well

BUILD UP THEM BLUES

angle? what?

Made a rather bizarre noise too. :O You can hear it in the video.

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING

Anyway let's go Pikmin peep peep

I HOPE YOU TWO ARE DONE WITH YOUR ROCKS

All together now alltogethernow

These are interesting little things. Pikmin will beat on the bottom of this stick and tank empties and it'll stretch out across gaps and such. Those getting me that gear I see over there which look suspiciously ship related. IT WILL BE MINE.

HONEYWISP, YOU MESSIN WITH ME

There we go, more flowers. I have a real shortage of flowers in this so far, I've noticed. That explosion really set me back. D:

And once the stick is fully extended, the Pikmin can shimmy across it and drop off in a different area! I honestly don't know how this is supposed to work THE PIKMIN ARE SUPER BUILDERS LIKE LEMMINGS no wait

Hey, a Breadbug! These guys won't hurt your Pikmin... well, directly.

Breadbugs go after pellets or bodies that are lying around, so you can follow them to interesting stuff sometimes.

Looks like the Pikmin got it down from the ledge!

Olimar, space travel connoiseur.

SHEARGRUBS AGH

See that gout of flame there? That came from Fiery Blowhog, which just loves this area to death. Fiery spits out flame at anything passing by, but thankfully the Red Pikmin happen to be immune! In Pikmin 2, if your Pikmin catch on fire, you can whistle to them to save them. In this one, I don't think that's really an option. D: I think if they get set alight, they're pretty much toast. THUS if you're wandering around a lot of Fiery Blowhogs, you'll want to have reds with you.

Pikmin2 also introduced Watery Blowhogs that spout water, but they really aren't that dangerous since you can just whistle your Pikmin back. BUT since at the moment I have blues and yellows with me, I had to deal with the Sheargrubs and also not let anyone get set on fire by the Fiery Blowhog, SO IT WAS A BIT HECTIC.

See there, the Breadbug grabbed a Shergrub body! But there's a Pikmin on it too.

In fact, the Pikmin overpower the Breadbug in this case, and drag it slowly back to the Onion.

I should get rid of this wall. I need some bomb rocks.

WHARE R YOU GAIS

There's the Breadbug!

The Breadbug doesn't get sucked up easily (for... some reason) and takes damage when it hits the Onion. It's the ONLY way to do damage to a Breadbug that I'm aware of. You have to win a tugofwar with it at least twice. :O

Awwww, Olimar. <3

Here, you can see that only one Pikmin is on the pellet/body or whatever, and therefore the Breadbug is overpowering it. The Breadbug has a lair nearby, I didn't get a shot of it though sorry, but if the Breadbug drags a Pikmin all the way to its lair, it WILL kill the Pikmin that gets dragged along. D: Other than that, Breadbugs can't hurt you, and you generally can't hurt them. They can be annoying if they're stealing your pellets and such and can maybe cost you a Pikmin or two if you're not careful, but generally they're just a nuisance. They get MUCH more annoying in Pikmin 2 when they snag treasures and drag them around.

MY TWO PIKMIN DEFEAT YOU, BREADBUG! HAHA!

What have we here

I wonder what that entails. :O

The Blues can really use the Breadbug, so I split them up here by color. It can be a bit tricky to do this in narrow areas, as the Pikmin go a set distance apart and will fall off edges or something if you're not paying attention. Darn you Pikmin.

Theeere we go.

That taken care of, let's get this float back in place!

Hee hee. I BELIEVE IT.

Four more, not bad!

I nailed a honeywisp here and like, 20 Pikmin got to the nectar. :D Woo!

Not a log, as one might suspect!

A rolled up bridge! At least, that's how I always looked at it. :O Like someone rolled up a teeny little bridge, and the Pikmin roll em out. Olimar makes a journal entry about this, I think. :O I should see if I can get it for you.

UNROLL THEM ALL

Darn it, that Blowhog down there seems intent on roasting anyone who's working on the bridge. Looking back on this, I should have dropped off the yellows and blues at base and just taken the reds, but eh.

There we go, stay with me you guys.

Alright, let's go!

Here I used the c-stick to keep the Pikmin close to me. That can be useful for narrow paths or moving quickly, or keeping Pikmin from lagging behind you. It can be a bit awkward to use the c-stick and navigate at the same time though. :O Check the controller layout in the first day and you'll see what I mean.

Safely across the open area, and another bridge! Technically, you should use yellows and throw them over the bridge here, but I'm lazy and used a shortcut by throwing the reds on the edge juuuuuust close enough for them to start working on it.

Woop, threw too many. They just fall off ledges if you're not paying attention. :O

LEAVE THE GRASS ALONE GOD

Well, I have a few yellows with me. WHY NOT.

This was weird. :O You can see it in the video, but apparently I was at just such an angle under the bridge where the yellows flew WAY off to the left. :O

There we go, now we're getting somewhere.

DARN IT I AM SO CLOSE TO THIS PIECE, I CAN MAKE IT

Checkin the radar, and watching the video I see there is a single red Pikmin lying around where I built the first two bridges, but I couldn't see it when I was actually playing, even when I was zoomed in. D: Not good.

Which pieces is this... I think I know which one it is. This one should be real easy to get, just a little annoying to get back.

Aha, I know this one. Will need some bombrocks and more yellows before I deal with this, but shouldn't be that hard, I think.

Tiny green dots for Pikmin planted, but I didn't see anything else, so...

COME ON GUYS GRAB IT AND GO

Since I didn't get a shot of it before for some reason. :B A spring! I've got mostly reds on it, I think, so the Fiery Blowhogs didn't worry me too much. They're running as fast as they can, but I'm not sure they'll make it back...

LOOK OUT GUYS

OH FRICK COUNTDOWN

This was some REAL bad luck for me here. I went into this corner to avoid the Blowhog for a second, and an Iridescent Flint Beetle popped out. Remember when I mentioned there are some enemies that Pikmin will attack no matter what you do? Kind of like grass and rocks. Well, Flint Beetles are one of those creatures, and Pikmin will stop whatever they're doing to chase a Flint Beetle around. Which is interesting, since a Pikmin can't hurt a Flint Beetle, since they have a thick shell. What you need to do is peg the Flint Beetle with a thrown Pikmin, which will flip it over and cause it to drop some nectar or pellets. Generally not a problem, just a mild irritation.

BUT at this moment, I was trying to avoid getting my few blues/yellows toasted, and having them run after a Flint Beetle towards a Blowhog was NOT GOOD and the timer was COUNTING DOWN AND COME ON GUYS I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE YOU BEHIND STAY WITH ME

There you can kind of see the Beetle, the green thing in the corner. Even more awesome that this happened right next to a patch of grass. NOT THE BEST PLACE TO BE SCRAMBLING TO COLLECT PIKMIN

What I should have done here is just gone up the bridge, called the ones carrying the piece, then came back and tried to collect the ones I left behind if they hadn't burned to death. But at the time I was trying to keep everyone alive and with me, and this ended up being a mistake. D:

LEAVE THE GRASS ALONE OH GOD I HAVE SEVEN SECONDS TO GO COME ON

Interestingly enough, no Pikmin died of fire this time around.

My blues and yellows stayed safe with me. D: Although reds kept falling off the edges of this bridge and noooooo

I WANT TO SAVE YOU ALL COME ON COME ON THE GUYS ON THE PIECE ARE AHEAD OF US WE HAVE TO CATCH THEM

I think it was at this moment I realized that I'd never catch up with the 45 carrying the Gravity Jumper now, and all I could do was try to keep everyone I had with me with me.

All I could do was hope they made it in time, or were at least close enough to the Onions to be safe. D:

PEEPEEEEEEP

I don't see them. D: I don't think they made it guys.

And a few Pikmin run for their lives from the Wollywog.

I'M SORRY I TRIED I REALLY DID D: D:

Olimar didn't mention losing them to the End of the Day this time, since Blue Pikmin kind of trump it. Blue Pikmin always kind of look like they're D:ing all the time.

46 lost to the night. D: D: I hate losing them that way IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED

And they were all reds too GOD I'M LOSING REDS LEFT AND RIGHT

I WILL STRUGGLE ONWARDS

The Gravity Jumper will be waiting for me where the Pikmin dropped it when I come back here, but I decided to head somewhere else for the next day.

And the video! You can see me panicking a bit at the end. Arrrrgh.
