Anyway, earlier today a track from Secret of Mana came on, and it got me to thinking about why I do these. Screencap Adventures I mean. As time has gone along, they've kind of developed a very specific purpose, which I know I've elaborated before but I feel like talking about again. Feel free to skip this lj-cut if you're bored.
As far back as I can remember, video games have always played a part in my life. My earliest memories involve video games in some way or fashion. There's so much of who I am today that is affected or influenced by those games. My sense of humor, turns of phrase, taste in music, that kind of thing, all of it I feel links back to some game or another in my past. More than anything, I identify myself as a gamer. It's something I've done all my life, and it's always been something I can turn to. It's kind of been a comfort zone to me, in a way, to lose myself in some video game or another. I know some people do it through books or movies or tv shows or thousands of different things, but I've always escaped through video games. Sometimes they were the only things I really looked forward to, and when times got really tough, say, during elementary school or middle school, I would get through it all by thinking about a game I could play when I got home. I'd come home utterly miserable, feeling worthless and depressed, and I'd load up old Sierra games on our old computer and sing along with the themes and feel better. I'd play old saved games at certain points and smile, I'd levelgrind in E.V.O or something and just let it all fade away.
If I feel like being melodramatic about it, I feel like having those games there helped me make it through it all. To have something that was always there, that I could always vanish into whenever things got too hard. I think that's why Dreaming While I Wake always has such an effect on me, because in a way that's just what it's like for me.
I have so many memories associated with these games. From when I played them to who I played them with. They mean so much to me because I'm not sure who I'd be or where I'd be without them there. They're a part of me and a huge part of my past.
I do these screencap adventures because I want to get people interested in these games for one, because they're all ones that I really enjoyed to an extent, but also because I want to share something that means a lot to me. To kind of show my appreciation for something that altered who I am today, or changed how I view things, or anything like that. I love these games, and I just want to share and express that with people, and hopefully get them interested so that they can play the game and maybe experience some of that magic themselves.
As most of you probably know I don't open up about myself very often, and in a way, through sharing these games, I'm sharing some deep, personal part of myself.
Secret of Mana is one of those games that I love to death, that got me through so much, that has so many memories and so much joy associated with it, but I can't do a screencap adventure for it because it's always been something that me and Alix play together. I can't play it by myself, it just feels wrong. Super Metroid, another game that I loved to death, would be difficult to do as well, since it's a platformer and all, but it still had an effect on me. But there are so many old DOS games that just...to this day, they still find a way to come through, just small references here and there, memories of things. Dreams even.
I'm rambling and I kind of forgot where I was going with this. OH WELL.
ENOUGH OF THAT. LET'S FUNERAL! I mean, Earthbound. Let's Earthbound.
hee hee bird phone. I WILL NEVER STOP BEING AMUSED BY THIS
Oh yeah, Deep Darkness music! It's very, very dramatic. Heh. Kind of pounding. It's a neat theme, really.
The Eye Awakens the Jungle
Deep Darkness remix by Cromkayer, lots of guitars
Darkest Deeps from Bound Together, a rather interesting piano rendition of it.
GOOD BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THAT
Kay let's get crackin. If you wander through the swamp in these lighter areas, you don't take damage. The darker areas will mess you up gradually though.
Like so. Getting this deep will cause that ominous red screen flash which always means something nasty is going on. You know what I mean.
OH WEAPONS GUY, YOU'RE EVERYWHERE
NO, IT'S MY SECRET FOREVER
YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG
that was amazing
DARN IT without Poo it's so much more annoying to have to juggle items.
[insert immature joke here]
Believe it or not, this can be useful. You'll see.
YOU MEAN THE SHY ONE BEHIND THE TREE?
I think there's some rare critter in the swamp that will diamondize you if you're really unlucky, thus the healing thing. I'm not sure though, I can't remember for positive.
YEAH YOUR FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR DIAMOND BAND IS REALLY A POOR ITEM UH HUH
fine mister shy doctor just hide behind your tree then i don't care
Good thing I have one of those! Wait, why would a monkey know about that?
CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN.
Magic truffles are pretty sweet, and rather important later on, especially if you haven't been obsessively leveling like I have.
In we go!
that is pretty dark yes
There we go! I wonder if someone could get through that without the hawkeye if they were really stubborn. Or had a map. That would be really annoying though.
I THINK I'LL PASS ON YOUR WONDERFULLY STUPID OFFER, REED MAN.
Not as annoying as you may think.
Forcing myself to use rare items because otherwise I never do. And I also needed the item space. I NEED TO STOP HOARDING ITEMS.
It's worth the effort. They restore like, 80PP or something, and I think that's the highest any item can, unless it's Poo and a Brain Food Lunch.
Jeff: HELP I'M STUCK IN THE GROUND OH GOD
That is a pretty awesome shot though, hahaha.
Whoever taught this bird grammar should be smacked.
did someone drop that out of a plane or what
HEY, DOES THAT HELICOPTER LOOK FAMILIAR?
THINK BACK...BACK TO THAT ONE HUGE CITY, YOU KNOW...FOURSIDE... remeeeeembeeeeer
Frigging tiny one pixel enemies.
That's cool Jeff, you can't fix em all. Although who made off with the engine?
MAYBE IT WAS YOU, DEMONIC PETUNIA which is also the most awesome name for an enemy ever
YEAH TAKE THAT there's an awesome little comic about the monkey's love actually
this can be useful if you're lazy, since you can just have Paula pin it down, then whack at it and not take damage. Wheee
Yup. Maaagic truffle.
They will, in fact, find you anywhere. ANYWHERE. Well almost anywhere.
I HATE THESE THINGS
AND THIS IS WHY
Heh, the Manly Fish amuses me because there's another enemy called the Manly Fish's Brother, no joke, but I didn't run into it for some reason. :O
Hee hee. Manly Fish and Manly Fish's Brother.
HMM, THAT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD.
YOU ALL REMEMBER, RIGHT?
BELCH ALSO SPEAKS NOW IN THE THIRD PERSON, AN UNAVOIDABLE SIDE EFFECT OF BECOMING MORE POWERFUL
I'm picturing him just vomiting uncontrollably all over Ness who has a D: face and for some reason that is making me laugh really hard right now
thank you for the lovely mental image good sir
SCREW YOU PK THUNDER
YEAH TAKE THAT WOOOO POO HURRAAAY
OH WAIT AWESOME
HURRAY POO'S BACK HURRAY I HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE SWAMP BEFORE I DIE HURRAY
Poo's Starstorm is really useful, primarily because it does good damage but it also doesn't cost very much. Only 24, as you see here, as opposed to Ness's Special power, which costs a TON. Poo also has the PP to back that up, while Ness, although he is a massive tank of HP, does not have very much PP. That's why I almost never use Ness's Special power, since I try to conserve his PP for Healing. Poo, on the other hand, is awesome because he has the PP to generally let me Starstorm to my heart's content. I feel like that was totally convoluted. OH WELL.
Finally getting somewhere.
Haha awesome, instakill.
A CAVE ALRIGHT!
Shy you say.
These little guys are called Tendas, if that hasn't been mentioned yet, and we've finally made it to their village! Their theme has a kind of minimalistic, sparse feel to it, which works for these little shy guys.
Ask Yourself (Tenda Village)
Looking around, I don't think I have any remixes for them. :O Huh, I coulda sworn I did. Ah well.
"SO CARL, WHAT SHOULD WE DO WITH THIS DEATH RAY?"
"YOU KNOW WHAT, I'VE NEVER USED IT, JUST TOSS IT OUT."
Not bad, not bad.
Then apparently I immediately walked out. Okay, sure. A SUDDEN PHONECALL AND HEY APPLEKID sup
Then immediately after that, another phone call!
this is vital information
You know, if you care or anything. Just thought I'd give a headsup.
HEY, GUESS WHAT BOOK WE NEED!
And yet the gals love that sexy orange kid
THANKS FOR NOTHING
Anyway back inside.
I am going to get that book and knock the shyness right out of you
what a lovely inn
Woah, Mukki flashbacks.
I bet that guy in Scaraba would love to hear about this!
Sure, sounds neat.
HMMM, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO? LET ME THINK.
Where could Apple Kid be?!?! TUNE IN NEXT TIME.
